Historical/biog note:
Engineer and bridge builder. Studied at City College of New York, and Columbia University (P.h.D., 1911). The designer of many of the world's most famous bridges, he taught at the University of Idaho, 1910-1915, before returning to New York to collaborate with Gustav Lindendahl in designing Hell Gate Bridge over the East River. In 1920, Steinman began his own consulting firm, and then in partnership with Holton D. Robinson from 1924-1945. Other longtime associates included R.M. Boynton, C.H. Grunquist, and J. London. Some of the major projects of Steinman and his associates included the Mount Hope Bridge (R.I.), Saint John Bridge (Oregon), Brooklyn Bridge reconstruction, and Mackinac Bridge (Michigan). Steinman was also an author of books on bridge building and builders. His biography of John A. and Washington Roebling was critically acclaimed and the basis for a motion picture production of Irving Stone.
Abstract:
Contents include published articles and photographs of bridges designed by Steinman and associates, especially the Mackinac Bridge (MI), Mount Hope Bridge (RI), St. John Bridge (Oregon), and Brooklyn Bridge reconstruction; manuscript of "The Builders of Bridges ..." and related correspondence from reviewers in the academic, engineering, and publishing communities. Also included are three letters from Irving Stone of Universal Studios concerning a film production based on the book. Other papers include Steinman's Columbia University course notebooks and his doctoral dissertation; reports on Hell Gate Bridge and other work while employed with Waddell & Son, engineering consulting firm, 1915-1920.
