Historical/biog note:

Historical/biog note:
John Kiersted, Sr., a son of Dr. Christopher Kiersted, was born February 24, 1786, in Saugerties, Ulster County, N.Y. Kiersted studied surveying with William Cockburn and eventually chose surveying as his life's vocation. Through his activities as a land speculator and his interests in commercial activities such as tanning and lead manufacture, Kiersted became a prominent citizen of Ulster County. In 1814 he was elected to the New York State Legislature as the representative from Sullivan and Ulster counties.
Historical/biog note:
On January 19, 1811 Kiersted married Nelly Wynkoop, and had three sons, John, Jr., Wynkoop and James. Kiersted died December 3, 1862 at Tannersville, Greene County.
Historical/biog note:
John Kiersted, Jr. was the eldest son of John Sr., and Nelly. He was born on February 8, 1813, and was educated at the Albany Academy. Kiersted initially functioned as a surveyor, but later became involved in the tanning business and eventually formed W. Kiersted and Co. with his brother Wynkoop. Later Kiersted became involved in the organization of the Bank of Ulster at Saugerties. Kiersted became president of the bank, which later changed its name to the First National Bank of Saugerties.
Historical/biog note:
Kiersted was married to Maria A. Lockwood on October 1, 1850. Together they had two sons, who died in infancy and a daughter Maria Augusta.
Abstract:
The Kiersted family papers are comprised of 15 boxes of material relating to the lifetime activities of John Kiersted, Sr., and his son John Kiersted, Jr. They include correspondence, land records, and business papers. The correspondence consists mainly of letters to John, Sr. and John, Jr. Most letters regard family matters, land, and the tanning business. The land records include surveys, maps and field notes of lands on the Hardenburgh Patent compiled by John Kiersted, Sr. Also included are a few surveys of areas outside the Catskill region, such as the gorge between the Hoosick and Pittstown Patents, lists of lands belonging to the family, and deeds and leases to family land. Business papers comprise the final component of the collection. These papers include ledgers of accounts, bills, receipts, tannery business papers and some material on the business activities of the Reformed Dutch Church of Saugerties. An accretion to the collection includes some additional land surveys that pre-date those completed by John Kiersted, Sr.
