Transportation history collection, 1905-1985
Abele, Fred B., collector.
Author:
Abele, Fred B., collector.
Title:
Transportation history collection, 1905-1985.
Quantity:
88 boxes (40.0 cubic ft.)
Arrangement:
Organized into 2 series: I.Photographs and prints. II.Papers and Ephemera.
Review:
Collection is comprised chiefly of original photographs taken by Abele and others, circa 1930-1950, of railroads and trolley lines that operated primarily in New York State, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont. The photographs of the United Traction Company, that operated streetcars and buses in Albany, Troy, and vicinity, provide one of the most comprehensive photographic record of this firm's rolling stock. There is also extensive photographic documentation of other important transportation companies that served the Capital District region of New York State: Schenectady Railway Company, Fonda, Johnstown, and Gloversville Railroad, Delaware and Hudson Railroad, and the New York Central System. In addition, there are numerous images of the New Haven Division of the Connecticut Company.
Abstract:
Water transportation is also extensively documented too, particularly the steamboat lines that plied the Hudson River, Lake George, and Lake Champlain. The fleet of the Hudson River Day Line has the most thorough photographic record. Other graphic materials of interest include vintage postcard views of Albany, New York, and pictures of covered bridges in New York State and Vermont.
Abstract:
Research materials and paper ephemera augment the visual record. Included are files related to the published history of the Mohawk & Hudson Railroad compiled by Abele, and drafts and notes for a proposed publication on the history of the United Traction Company and public transportation in Albany and the Capital District. Ephemeral materials include public and employee timetables of major railroads from the 1930s through the 1970s, rulebooks, locomotive operating manuals, maps, posters, transfer ticket stubs, and travel brochures.
