Review:
The collection contains approximately 3,650 World War I propaganda posters and related ephemera dating from circa 1914 to 1920. The posters were created by government and military agencies as well as patriotic societies and private charities supporting the war effort. While the majority of the posters were created in the United States, there are also a considerable number that were produced in Great Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Australia. The images and text of the posters convey messages chiefly related to military recruitment and enlistment, food and fuel conservation, aid for soldiers and humanitarian causes, war work, savings and bond programs, and post-war civilian relief. The United States Committee on Public Information Office and similar agencies in other countries produced many of these posters. Many well-known artists of the era are represented in this collection, including Cyrus Leroy Baldridge, M. Leone Bracker, Howard Chandler Christy, James Montgomery Flagg, Charles Dana Gibson, and Edward Penfield in the United States; Frank Brangwyn in Great Britain; Abel Faivre, Francisque Poulbot, and Théophile Steinlen in France; Lucian Bernhard, Fritz Erler, and Ludwig Hohlwein in Germany; and Mario Borgoni in Italy
