Historical/biog note:
The first organizational meeting of the Albany Torch Club was held on June 4, 1926 at the Hotel Ten Eyck in Albany, New York. The Club was formed with the purpose of providing men of learned professions with the opportunity to socialize with one another and to engage in intellectual presentations on a wide range of topics. The Club is a part of the larger International Association of Torch Clubs, which was founded in 1924 by William Bullock for the purpose of broadening intellectual and social horizons. Today the Albany Torch Club is one of nearly seventy Torch Clubs in the United States and Canada. While the Association provides some oversight and assistance, local chapters such as the Albany Torch Club create their own bylaws, define membership requirements, and establish various other governing principles in order to facilitate intellectual and social exchange amongst area professionals.
Review:
The archives of the Albany Torch Club include administrative records, subject files, publications, and floppy and compact disks containing various administrative records. Many of the administrative records consist of meeting minutes as well as accompanying attachments such as correspondence, news clippings, meeting notices, and membership rosters. Additionally, a small number of papers presented at meetings by Albany Torch Club members can be found among the administrative records. Additional materials found in the Albany Torch Club archives include financial records, membership applications, directories, photographs, and certificates and awards. The subject files include records created by the Adirondack Torch Club and the Schenectady Torch Club as well as records related to the International Association of Torch Clubs and the yearly conference that it holds.
