Historical/biog note:
Richard Draper Douglass, the son of William S. Douglass and Jane G. (Arthur), was born in Westport, Essex County, New York, October 23, 1836. He studied at Phillips Academy, Exeter, N.H., and Williston Seminary, and was a graduate of Amherst College, class of 1860. He was an agent of the U. . Christian Commission, in Alabama, Tennessee, and Virginia from 1864 to 1865. He served in the Commissary Department of the United States Army, City Point, Virginia, in 1865. After a brief stint in business in Boston, Douglass was a special relief agent for the Brooklyn Children's Aid Society from 1867 to 1873, and general superintendent of the society from 1873 to 1885. On September 13, 1864, Douglass married Mary A. Lawrence, daughter of E. Appleton Lawrence. He died in Brooklyn, New York, April 2, 1885.
Review:
These papers consist chiefly of correspondence detailing the life and career Richard Draper Douglass, and his relationships with his friends, college classmates, and siblings. Principal correspondents were Ebenezer and Francis Arthur Douglass, and Charles Brigham Ruggles. During the first decade the letters focused mostly on student life and academic studies, particularly at Amherst College which most of the writers had attended. During the later years the letters provide a glimpse of the careers of the correspondents. Ebenezer pastored churches in Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island for a number of years before moving to Minnesota in 1873. Arthur Douglass served as a missionary in India for several years before taking charge of a church in Ohio about 1867. Charles B. Ruggles taught school in Sag Harbor, New York, from 1862 to 1864 before assuming a position with the United States Sanitary Commission.
