Historical/biog note:
Howard West (1918-1995) was an officer in U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He also served in the armed forces during the Korean War. He married Mildred Wahle (1918-2006) in November 1940. They resided in Valley Stream, New York, at the time.
Review:
These papers consist chiefly of correspondence between Howard and Mildred West of Valley Stream, N.Y., while he was serving in the armed forces during World War II and the Korean War. Howard's letters detail life in a military barracks: how soldiers spent their time and did their chores, and of the kinds of training they were put through as well as his affection and concern for Mildred's wellbeing. Mildred in turn wrote of her affection for her husband along with details of work and family doings and discusses their finances and future plans. The papers also include birthday and holiday greeting cards, souvenir picture postcards, photographs, and a diary kept by Mildred in 1934.
