Historical/biog note:
FeMail was a "Correspondence Magazine" that was formed by a group of women in the United States and Great Britain during the mid-1960s. This was basically a loosely organized club of women who agreed to rotate letters about their lives and careers amongst all members of the group on a monthly basis. There were 10-12 women in the group from 1982 to 2010. Distribution of members between the two countries was about half and half. All were married with children except one. The primary qualification for membership in this particular group was that all the women were also members of Mensa, a social organization for individuals with high IQ.
Review:
This archive consists almost exclusively of letters written by members of FeMail from its beginning to the present time. The letters were sent via the postal system until the late 1990s, at which time email became the preferred means of communication. Hard copies continued to be printed for archival purposes. The letters submitted by each member generally consist of two parts: a section called "news" , which contained a summary of activities and events deemed worthy of mention; and a section called "personals", which were responses to content read in letters of the previous month. Although there was very little restriction on subject matter, intimate details of life were not often discussed. Health, travel, children, politics, cultural events, religion, generalized observations of life, hobbies, work, pets, gardens - these are the bulk of the letters' content.
Terms of use/reprod:
Restricted: No material from the collection may be reproduced or published for a period of 30 years, from April 2011 to April 2041, without express written permission from members of FeMail or their heirs, or representatives.
