Historical/biog note:
Norman Kellar (1914-2012) grew up on a farm in Ellenville, Ulster County, New York. After graduating from Ellenville High School in 1932, he enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and then transferred to and graduated from Fordham Law School in 1938. After earning his law degree, Mr. Kellar initially pursued a career as a farmer, deciding that farming would be the safer career path than that of a lawyer during the economic hardships of the Great Depression. He eventually returned to law in the early 1950s, working simultaneously as a lawyer and a farmer.
Historical/biog note:
In 1944, Norman and his wife Tullia purchased the 88-acre Bontecou Farm in New Paltz, Ulster County, New York. The farm operated with Holstein cattle, chickens, and field crops. The Kellars lived on the farm for the rest of their lives. In 1955 Kellar opened his own law firm in Kingston, Ulster County, New York, under the name of Kellar, Kellar, and Jaiven. Even as his career as a civil litigator was taking off, Norman continued to farm. Norman Kellar passed away on June 26, 2012.
Review:
The collection consists primarily of papers created and collected by Norman Kellar as they pertain to his life as a dairy farmer in Ulster County, New York, during the 1940s and 1950s. There are dozens of informational pamphlets, brochures, instructional and technical manuals related to dairy farming, many of which were published in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Topics range from breeding techniques for cattle to treatment and prevention of various bovine diseases to the economics of milk and dairy production.
