Papers consist chiefly of correspondence of John Davis, who lived Town of Kirkland, Oneida County, New York, with his brother, James, who resided in Litchfield County, Connecticut. The content of letters provide news about the family along with anecdotes about the economic, political, religious, and social activity of the time. The letter of May 21, 1821, speaks of the "great awakening" in regards to the religious experience of relatives. In 1828, two letters detail the opening of the Erie Canal and its impact on the growth and development of Utica and surrounding area. Also includes two letters, ca. 1832, written by Mercy Webb, daughter of James, to her brother William concerning religious beliefs and other family business. One of theses letters mentions the founding of Cleveland, New York,
