Historical/biog note:
James Demarest operated a wholesale liquor distribution business which was based in Rochester, New York., with a branch in Boston, Massachusetts. The business was run in conjunction with the whiskey and foreign liquor supplier, Gordon, Fellow & McMillan, based in New York City. His brother-in-law, Martin R. Cook, was also involved in the firm. In the late nineteenth century, the company was re-named M.R. Cook & Co. and, later, Cook & Bernheimer.
Historical/biog note:
James Demarest was married to Martha Day sometime during the mid to late 1860s. They had at least four children. and were residents of Rochester, New York for many years.

The papers of James Matthew Demarest document his personal and family life as well as his wholesale liquor distribution business. His personal papers consist chiefly of correspondence with his wife, children and other close relatives. Their letters detail news about friends and family, social and civic activities, health, weather, travel, and other routine aspects of everyday life. Other personal and family papers include bills and receipts for goods and services purchased by the Demarest family, such as groceries, clothing, shoes, furniture, glass, china, masonry work, home repair, taxes, and utilities.
Abstract:
These papers also contain correspondence and other records related to the active involvement of Martha Demarest (wife of James Demarest) in the Humane Society of Rochester dating from the late 1880s to the early 1890s. The correspondence tends to concern fund raising efforts, legal issues, legislation, and lobbying activities.
Abstract:
Papers related to the wholesale liquor distribution business consist chiefly of incoming correspondence of James Demarest, which detail matters of accounting and financing as well as sales, transportation, and distribution of goods to business clients. Other business records include account memorandum books that detail travel expenses, orders and wholesale prices for whiskey and other spirits bought and sold, and names of business associates and clients.
