Historical/biog note:
The family of Jacob Parmerter (ca. 1821-1907) was living in the hamlet of Schroon River, Essex County, New York, when the Civil War began in 1861. His oldest son, George, enlisted in October 1861 as a private with Company H of the 5th New York Cavalry Regiment. He died of disease while in service in May 1862. Jacob enlisted in August 1862 as a captain of Company E of the 118th New York Infantry Regiment, which was known as the Adirondack Regiment. He was wounded in action June 2, 1864, at Cold Harbor, and received a disability discharge on December 15, 1864. After the war, Jacob Parmerter and family moved to Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York.
Review:
These papers consist chiefly of correspondence between Jacob and George Parmerter, while the latter served in the army from October 1861 to May 1862. George wrote about his experiences in the military, including news of his fellow soldiers, and of his personal health problems. His father replied with words of encouragement and hope that someday he would see his son home from the war alive and well. However, his hopes were dashed as he received the letter informing him of his son's death.
Review:
The papers also include letters of other family members regarding their experiences in the military. Eugene Parmerter wrote from Camp Randall at Madison, Wisconsin, on February 12, 1865, informing his father that he and his brother, Frederick, had enlisted with the 47th Wisconsin Volunteers. James Parmerter sent his parents letters in 1872 and 1873, detailing his service in the 6th U.S. Army Infantry, which was primarily responsible at the time for protecting settlers from raids by Native Americans in the Dakota Territory. John E. Upson, a family relative, wrote from Manila, Philippines Islands, June 20, 1899, in regards to his experiences of being part of the U.S. Army occupation force.
