Historical/biog note:
Hamilton Fish, Jr. was born in Washington, D.C. on June 3, 1926, served from New York State in the United States House of Representatives from 1969-1995. He was awarded a seat on the Judiciary Committee during his first term and remained there until his retirement, eventually rising in seniority to the position of ranking minority member. In 1974, he was one of the few Republicans on the Judiciary Committee to break party ranks in casting votes affirming articles of impeachment brought against President Richard Nixon. During the 1980's Fish was also involved in impeachment proceedings brought against Harry E. Claiborne and Alcee Lamar Hastings, both of whom were federal court justices. Congressman Fish was actively involved in the passage of the Fair Housing Act, Voting Rights Act extension, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the 1990 Civil Rights Act extension. Hamilton Fish retired from Congress in 1994. He passed away in Washington, D. C. July 23, 1996
Review:
The bulk of these records document the activities of Hamilton Fish and his office staff while serving in the Unite States House of Representatives from 1969 through 1994. Records include correspondence, office memorandum, speeches, press releases scrapbooks, campaign ephemera and audio-visual materials. Some records of special interest include those related to Fish's role in the Nixon impeachment proceedings conducted by the Judiciary Committee in 1974 that include his handwritten notes made during the hearings and annotated reports relative to Impeachment federal government officials, particularly the president. Also included, are annotated transcripts of recorded presidential conversations, 1971-1973, newspaper articles related to his stance on the issue and a video recording of his statement before the House, delivered on July 25, 1974. Other records of interest relate to legislative issues considered during his congressional career such as abortion, banking reform, campaign reform, capital punishment, civil rights, education, energy conservation, environment, health care, fair housing, social security and veterans affairs.
