Historical/biog note:
James Gibson, attorney and politician, was born at Salem, New York, 5 September 1816. He was educated at Washington Academy, and in 1836 was admitted to law practice. In 1838, he assumed the position as editor of the Washington County Post which was affiliated with the Whig Party. He edited it through the presidential election campaign of 1840. In 1848, he was an unsuccessful candidate for justice of the Supreme Court. In 1850, he was elected to the position of Washington County Judge, that he held from November 1851 to November 1855. In 1866, he was elected to the New York State Senate, where he served for only two years.. Gibson was also an active member of numerous civic, learned, fraternal, and social organizations in Salem. He served on the Board of Trustee's of the Washington Academy for many years, in which he took an active interest in administrative matters. He was also active in the Washington County Historical Society, serving as president in 1876. He devoted much time to researching and writing about the history of Salem. He died in Salem, 1897.
Abstract:
Collection of original manuscripts compiled by James Gibson that relate to matters of his personal and professional career as well as his interest in local history and the Washington Academy. Includes correspondence mostly with his brother, circ. 1832-1839, that contains comments on local government and politics; bound volume of incoming letters received as a member of the New York State Senate, 1866-1867; and an assortment of legal documents related to his law practice. Gibson's interest in local history, especially the Town of Salem, is documented in portion of a manuscript draft history of the town, he had written, and two scrapbooks consisting of newsclippings on people and events of Washington County, circa. 1893-1894. In addition this collection includes several early letters, landtitles, and court records of Salem that Gibson collected for his research. Lastly, this collection contains a variety of papers related to Gibson's position on the Washington Academy Board of Trustees. Included are letters related to the purchase of a piano; applications for teaching positions; subscription lists regarding building maintenance and academic facilities; and commencement programs.
