Historical/biog note:
Agriculturalist, educator, politician, and writer. Author of numerous books and articles dealing with agricultural and educational subjects. In addition, he wrote the Life and times of Thomas Jefferson (1858). He held several political and governmental positions including Cortland County (N.Y.) Superintendent of Schools, 1843-1847 and New York Secretary of State, 1852-1853. His principle residence was near Cortland, N.Y.
Review:
These papers consist chiefly of letters sent to Henry S. Randall from his many correspondents, not only in New York State, but from other states and countries as well. The topics include agriculture, education, history, government, politics and publishing. Many of his correspondents were prominent in the aforementioned occupations and fields of studies: Henry Barnard, Francis Wayland, Horace Webster, Ebenezer Emmons, Edouard de Verneuil, James Hall, John Romeyn Brodhead, Thomas G. Alvord, William B. Sprague, T. Romeyn Beck, E.B. O'Calllaghan, William Taylor, Edwin Croswell, William J. McAlpine, John S. Skinner, Henry Van Dyck, Joseph B. Varnum Jr, Willis Gaylord, and William B. Jarvis.
