Historical/biog note:
Charles Humphrey (February 14, 1692-April 17, 1850) commenced his career in law in 1816 in the office of William Ross in Newburgh, New York. About 1818 he moved to Ithaca, New York, where he established his own practice. He also became involved in politics in Ithaca and in Tompkins County. He was elected as an Adams candidate to the Nineteenth Congress (1825-1827) representing New York's 25th Congressional district (Tompkins and Tioga counties). Later he represented Tompkins County in the New York State Assembly from 1834 to 1836, and from 1841 to 1842.
Review:
These papers consist chiefly of letters addressed to Charles Humphrey, a New York lawyer and politician, and his son, William. The letters to Charles Humphrey concern his legal career, his financial and business affairs, and matters of local, state, and national politics. A number of letters indicate he was especially interested in building the Chenango Canal and other canals that linked the Susquehanna River basin with the Erie Canal. Later letters concern his interest in the development of the Erie Railroad and connections to Ithaca. William Humphrey's incoming letters primarily concern his law practice in Ithaca, New York, his financial investments, and his interest in the development of railroads.
