Historical/biog note:
Dr. Charles Dekay Cooper (1769-1831) was born in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York. He removed to Albany, New York in 1792 and was employed as a physician. He married Margaret Venor Tayler, the natural daughter of John and Eva (Van Valkenburgh) Venor and adopted daughter of her uncle, John Tayler (1742-1829), an Albany public official. Dr. Cooper was appointed health officer of the port of Albany and held other political offices including Indian agent, clerk of Albany County, and Secretary of New York State (1817). Dr. Cooper, his son, John Tayler Cooper (1798-1878), and his father-in-law, John Tayler, were land agents in New York State in addition to their other occupations. John T. Cooper was a lawyer with Bloodgood and Cooper and an officer in the New York Militia, being Major-General of the Third Division.
Review:
The collection is divided between the papers of Charles D. Cooper and his son John Tayler Cooper. The majority of the Charles D. Cooper papers, including correspondence, accounts of taxes, and land papers (field book and indentures) pertain to his endeavors as a land agent in N.Y.S. The legal series includes a power of attorney from Samuel Huntting and an indenture for an eight year old orphan, Ann Sweeney. The John Tayler Cooper papers contain correspondence, accounts, and land papers on his dealings as a land agent, primarily in Albany County, New York. The legal series includes court papers and related correspondence on the estates of John V. Pruyn and James King, Casparus F. Pruyn, and the custody of Charles Henry by Peter Seton Henry. The military papers pertain to John T. Cooper's participation in the New York Militia from about 1800 to 1874 and includes correspondence and documents on the business of running the army; regimental court actions, elections of officers, inspection returns, letters of resignation and miscellaneous rosters.
Provenance note:
