Historical/biog note:
John Tayler (1742-1829) was born in New York City and removed to Albany, New York at the age of seventeen. He married Margaret Van Valkenburgh and adopted her niece Margaret Venor who married Dr. Charles D. Cooper (ca. 1706/9-1831) and had John Tayler Cooper (1798-1878), among others. Tayler was a merchant and appointed, during the Revolution, Clothier General to the United States Army and later as agent to the Iroquois for the N.Y.S. Commission of Indian Affairs. Along with Charles D. Cooper and later John Tayler Cooper, he acted as land agent handling various properties in Albany County and throughout New York State. Tayler was also a lawyer and served as a public official in various capacities including state assemblyman and senator, canal commissioner, judge, lieutenant governor (1811, 1813-1817), acting governor (1817), and a member and chancellor of the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York.
Review:
The majority of the papers, including correspondence, accounts, tax receipts, land titles, and maps, pertain to John Tayler's endeavors as a land agent in New York State. There are accounts and related papers concerning his appointment as Clothier General to the United States Army in 1776, and as agent for the N.Y.S. Commission of Indian Affairs. The legal series contains documents and letters regarding various cases he handled including the estate of Jacob Evertson, the bankruptcy of John Smith, Veeder family land claims, and the will of Isaac Casparson Halnbak [Hollenbeck ?], (1708).
Provenance note:
A compilation of various collections and single accessions that now make up this collection and the Cooper Family Papers (accession number SC20184).
