Historical/biog note:
Edward Lasell Partridge, a practicing physician in New York City, was best known for promoting laws and legislation to preserve the natural features of the Palisades and Hudson River Highlands. He was successful in working with other individuals in realizing the establishment of Bear Mountain and Harriman State Parks and construction of Storm King Highway. He had also served on the Palisades Interstate Park Commission from 1913 to 1930.
Review:
Papers relating specifically to Edward L. Partridge's endeavors to preserve the natural environment of Hudson Highlands and Palisades. It includes correspondence with federal and state government officials regarding legislation to protect the lands, as well as other prominent individuals who shared his interest such as Mary W.A. Harriman, George F. Kunz, Henry Fairfield Osborn, Gifford Pinchot, John Burton Payne, and Charles M. Schwab. Some of this correspondence is also related to Edward Partridge's position with the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. Other papers include speeches delivered by Partridge; notes and memorandum related to legislation; a scrapbook containing news clippings, maps, and photographs, chronicling the establishment of Bear Mountain and Harriman state parks, and the construction of the Storm King Highway and Bear Mountain Bridge; and photograph albums that include pictures of family members and friends, homes and haunts, and the Hudson River highland region.
