Historical/biog note:
Mary E. Cunningham attended Cornell University and the State University of New York at Albany. In 1939 she joined the staff of the New York State Historical Association. During her tenure with that organization she served in a number of capacities including editor of "The Yorker" and "New York History", assistant to the director, associate director, director of school services, and librarian. In 1957 she began working for the New York State Education Department as a special consultant. She served the administration of John F. Kennedy as a branch chief in the Food and Drug Administration and later became the first head of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare's Consumer Protection Division. Following her government service Cunningham worked as an editorial director of social studies for Rand, McNally publishers.
Historical/biog note:
Among her other activities, Cunningham was the author of "Our York State" a syndicated column about New York State topics. She was also a founder of "American Heritage" magazine and served as its first editor. She was actively involved in the development of teaching materials for the teaching of New York State History and was an active member of the Democratic Party. Cunningham died at Cooperstown, N.Y.

This collection contains a wide variety of material that relates to the personal and professional life of Mary E. Cunningham. Included are various records relating to Cunningham's service at the New York State Historical Association. These include correspondence, publications and periodicals, memoranda concerning program development and material relating to her editorship of "New York History."

Also included are a number of files relating to Cunningham's activities in the development of educational programs about New York State History including material relating to the filmstrip series "Our York State" and her newspaper article of the same title. This material includes manuscripts of articles, clippings of the article and correspondence.

A large portion of the collection includes personal material relating to Cunningham's service in the Kennedy administration, her work at Rand McNally publishing and her activities in the Democratic party. Also included are other personal and family items including photos, Cunningham's resume', her transcripts from Cornell University and personal letters from family members. The material relating to her government service, publishing work and Democratic party activities includes correspondence, clippings, memoranda, publications and other material.
