Review:
These papers consist chiefly of letters John L. Houck sent to his wife Sophia, while he was serving in the army during the Civil War. The letters detail his experiences of military life, particularly his role as a musician (fifer) and later as aide in an army field hospital. He also discusses personal and family matters as well as commenting on politics and other current events of the time.

Ancillary materials filed with the papers include typed transcriptions of the letters and notes relative to family genealogy and history.
