Historical/biog note:
Asher Bliss, son of Simeon and Lucy (Southworth) Bliss, was born in West Fairlee, Vermont 20 February 1801. After graduating from Thetford (Vermont) Academy he earned B.A. and M.A. degrees at Amherst College in 1829 and 1832 respectively. Prior to 1832 he was graduated from Andover Theological Seminary. He was ordained as a missionary by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions at Post Mills Village, Vermont, 25 September 1832.
Historical/biog note:
From 1832 to 1851 he served as missionary to the Seneca Indians at Cattaraugus, New York. He continued in the same capacity for the American Home Mission Society at Corydon, Pennsylvania, 1851 through 1854 and back in western New York, 1854-56. In 1856-57 he served as "stated supply pastor" at Stockton, New York. From 1856 through 1867 he was stationed at "Alleghany Mission, New York". He was "without charge" from the latter year until his death in Onoville, town of South Valley, New York, 23 March 1881. Further details concerning this pastor-missionary and his family may be found in the "Amherst College Biographical Record," 1963, page 9 and in Aaron T. Bliss' "Genealogy of the Bliss Family in America," 1982, volume 1 pages 294-296.
