Rackett and Brother, ship brokers and commission merchants, was a business firm that was established in New York City in 1857. Its offices were situated at 52 South Street for many years. Ship brokers were agents that negotiated contracts betweens owners of ships and producers and sellers of goods that need to be transported. Ship brokers also handled the sale of vessel from party to another.
Review:
This series of records documents the business and commercial operations of a firm that specialized in the ship brokerage business in New York City during the last quarter of the 19th century. The records include correspondence with ship owners and firms hiring vessels for the transport of goods, accounts and receipts related to business transactions of the firm, a warrant for the arrest of a deserting seaman, masters certificates for vessels, log books of ships, and inventories of shipping vessels.
