These papers consist chiefly of correspondence of Levi Eaton, most of which relates to his experiences as a soldier while serving in Company D of the 123rd New York Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters detail routines aspects of military life along with vivid depictions of battles and campaigns, such as Gettysburg, the capture of Atlanta, and Sherman's March to the Sea.
Abstract:
The papers also contain a number of letters from a relative who lived in Montreal, Quebec. The letters detail news about the family, the author's teaching career, and offer a glimpse of what is was like to live in Montreal at the time.
Abstract:
The papers also include "boat books" for schooners that plied Lake Champlain, ca. 1849-1853, that record accounts of schooners, including items shipped, amounts due sailors, and accounts for boat maintenance. The books were kept by Orrin Landon of Willsboro, Essex County, New York.
