Historical/biog note:
Asa Stoddard (1814-1906) was born near Williamson, (Wayne County), New York, the son of Asa Williams Stoddard (1790-1868) and Lucretia Harding Stoddard (1793-1814). He was married first to Mary Ann Russell (1817-1846) who bore one daughter, Lucy Lucretia Stoddard (1838-1853). He was married again to Ann Elizabeth Anthony (1826-1849), who bore no children He was married a third time to Laura Jane Sanford (1825-1910), who bore two sons: William Sanford Stoddard (1853-1898) and Lucien Harding Stoddard (1855-1939). Asa Stoddard was a fruit farmer in Wayne County, New York for a number of years before removing to Kalamazoo County, Michigan in 1863, where he continued in the same occupation. Lucien Stoddard would eventually assume operation and inherit the title the family farm in Michigan. He was married about 1882 to Lavina A. Pease (1857-1944), and they had at least six children of which included Jane Stoddard Hagle (1892-1986).
Review:
The Stoddard Family Papers consist chiefly of correspondence of Asa Harding Stoddard, his third wife, Laura Jane (Sanford), and their son Lucien and his wife Lavinia (Pease). Most of the letters addressed to Asa H. Stoddard came from friends and relatives that remained in Wayne County, New York, after he and his family moved to Michigan in 1863. These letters generally concern agricultural interests as well as personal and family matters. Some of the more interesting letters Asa received, were from his friend John Adams of Williamson, New York, who detailed his fascination with spiritualism and attending camp meetings held near Casadaga Lake, New York. Other letters of special interest were written by Jacob Ubrassen, a former farm hand, who detailed his experiences of military service during the Civil War. He served in Company D of 160th New York Regiment of Infantry.
Review:
Correspondence of Lucien and his wife Lavinia (Pease) Stoddard consist chiefly of letters they received from relatives living in western New York State. Lucien's relatives lived in the vicinity of Williamson and Marion, in Wayne County , New York, whereas Lavinia's relatives lived in the vicinity of Alexander, Genesee County, New York and Scottsville, Monroe County, New York. These letters provide a glimpse of small town and rural life in upstate New York during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Review:
These papers also include a number of land titles, accounts, receipts, and other documents related to legal and financial matters of the Stoddard and allied families from about 1825 to 1860; correspondence and research materials related to family genealogy and history that were compiled by Jane Stoddard Hagle from 1940 to 1963.
Provenance note:
