Historical/biog note:
Leonard Kip (1774-1846) was a merchant in New York City and later the president of the North River Bank. He resided in Hartford, Connecticut toward the end of his life. Leonard Kip married Maria Ingraham and had three daughters and two sons: Reverend William Ingraham Kip (1811-?), who became Bishop of California, and Leonard Kip, a lawyer and writer of Albany, New York, who married Harriet Van Rensselaer. The Kip family came to America in 1635 with Hendrick Kype, resided over the generations in New York City and Albany, New York as well as on the large land acquisitions of Kipsburg, now Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York and the Kip's Bay farm on the shore of the East River in New York City between 26th and 42nd Streets.
Review:
The Kip family papers is an eclectic collection of manuscripts and printed materials related primarily to the genealogy and family history of Leonard Kip and his wife Harriet Van Rensselaer. Original manuscripts include a deed and attached survey map of the Kip's Bay farm lands that were situated along the East River in New York City, 1804; deed for cemetery lots for members of Kip family from the Reformed Protestant Church of New York on North Street in New York City, 1829-1830; and Leonard Kip's passport that was issued in 1853. The collection also includes scrapbook of Leonard Kip that contains his own sketches as well as engravings and prints he collected on ships, churches, nature, landscapes, portraits, and human interest scenes set in Rio de Janeiro, Europe, and New York State.
