Historical/biog note:
Albert Haller Tracy (1793-1859) was a prominent lawyer and politician from Buffalo, New York from the 1820s to the 1850s. He served in the United States house of Representatives, 1819-1825, and member of the New York State Senate, 1830-1838. He aligned himself first with the Anti-Masonic Party, then later with the Whigs.
Review:
The collection consists chiefly of letters addressed to Albert H. Tracy from 1815 to 1857, concerning economic conditions and matters of politics and government in New York State and the United States. In particular, many of these letters relate to Tracy's own career in the United States House of Representatives and the New York State Senate. There are also a number of letters concerning Tracy's involvement in the national conventions of Anti-Mason and Whig Parties and the presidential election campaigns. Tracy's correspondents included a number of prominent political figures of the time period: Millard Fillmore, Martin Van Buren, Nicholas Biddle, William Henry Seward, Thurlow Weed, Silas Wright, DeWitt Clinton, William L. Marcy, Lewis Cass, Francis Granger, and John C. Spencer.
