Historical/biog note:
The DeWitt family was a prominent Hudson Valley, N.Y. family. John DeWitt served as sherrif of Dutchess County, N.Y. during the late eighteenth century. Other family members were active in business, law, and political affairs, especially in Dutchess County, and New York City.
Abstract:
A large and diverse collection of material collected and created by the DeWitt family. Particular family members represented include Alfred, Andrew, Cornelius, Edward, Catherine, George G., Jenat, John, Peter, and William R. DeWitt. The family correspondence dates from 1756-1874 and includes personal letters between family members and friends. The business correspondence dates from 1787-1820 and includes material on land purchase and sale; and items such as accounts, agreements and other business documents. The legal and official papers include New York State Supreme Court Registers, 1792-1812, writs received and answered by the Dutchess County court of Common Pleas, kept by John DeWitt, 1789-1793; a book of costs for Dutchess County Court of Common Pleas and New York City Mayor's Court, 1797-1802; and other legal documents.
Abstract:
The collection also contains photographs of family members; maps; deeds; and certificates relating to family members.
