Historical/biog note:
Isaiah Townsend (1777-1838) and John Townsend (1783-1854) were merchants in Albany, N.Y. The brothers and their heirs, Franklin, Theodore and Rufus, were active in business and political developments of the day. Their business interests began and were concentrated in the iron trade but also included salt production, railroads, steamboats, real estate in New York and other states, banking, and insurance. Franklin Townsend (1821-1898), the son of Isaiah Townsend later assumed responsibility for the business and financial interests of his father and uncle.
Review:
The Townsend Family Business Papers contain extensive records of the many business ventures in Albany, Troy, and Syracuse, New York. The papers include correspondence, account statements, bills, receipts, orders, circulars, and legal documents. In particular, theres papers relate to business and financial transactions of I. & J. Townsend Iron Foundry, Watervliet Turnpike Co., Troy Iron and Nail Factory; and Syracuse Salt Company. Although most letters chiefly concern matters of business, there are also morsels of news about family matters and comments relative to politics and current events of the time. The bulk of these papers were created by John Townsend (1783-1854) and Franklin Townsend (1821-1898).
