Historical/biog note:
Duanesburg, a township comprising much of the western part of Schenectady County, New York was established by patent March 13, 1765. It was named after James Duane (1733-1797), a prominent leader in New York State politics and government as well as a lawyer and jurist. He inherited much of the land from his father, Anthony Duane (ca. 1679-1747), an officer in the Royal Navy, who settled in New York about 1700 and eventually propered in trade and commerce. James Duane greatly expanded the family estate by purchasing adjoining tracts of land.
Review:
These papers to the lands in the Duanesburg Patent, and records the conveyance of title by various speculators that led to the acquisition by Anthony and James Duane of some 100,000 acres. Included are deeds, leases, letters patent, legal papers, and surveys. Persons owning property or involved in land title transactions include John Watts, William Cosby, Daniel Horsmanden, Walter Butler, John Butler, Alexander Colden, and Cadwallader Colden. Many of these documents are original letters patents on vellum with pendant seals attached. Papers from later years relate to the management of lands by James Chatham Duane, the son of James Duane.
