Historical/biog note:
The Meneely Bell Foundry was established in 1826 by Andrew Meneely. Meneely began his business manufacturing precision engineering instruments as well as bells and clocks. In 1835 Meneely formed a partnership with Jonas Oothout and the firm's name was changed to Meneely and Oothout. In 1841 Oothout left the business to be replaced in 1849 by Meneely's son Edwin, changing the firm's name to Meneely and Son. Andrew Meneely died in 1851 and the firm was continued by his sons Edwin and George R. as Andrew Meneely's Sons, the firm's name was later changed to E.A. and G.R. Meneely. Shortly after Andrew's death the firm ceased the production of precision engineering instruments and clocks. In 1874 George left the business and the firm's name was finally changed to Meneely and Company.
Historical/biog note:
The Meneely Bell Foundry ceased operations in the early 1950's. The company was noted for it's high quality bells, which were sold to schools, churches and governments worldwide. This collection of records represents a small portion of the records of the company. These were salvaged from a larger bulk of Meneely records by the staff of the New York State Library in 1953.
Historical/biog note:
Meneely and Company Records, 1826-1945.
Review:
The collection consists of four types of records, including correspondence; business papers, which includes bills, receipts, account books and sales statements; legal papers, which includes deeds, bonds, and court papers; and non-manuscript material, which includes photographs, music for bell chimes, catalogs of Meneely and Company and printed material such as advertisements, forms and general information on bells.
Review:
Correspondence is generally organized alphabetically by year, and consists chiefly of business letters received by firm from 1836 to 1945. These letters generally detail costs of casting and shipping bells for its customers. Often included are preliminary sketches of churches, bell towers, bell inscriptions and orders. Also, a number of letters are simply inquires and requests forcatalogss.
Review:
The ledgers and journals detail thefinanciall transactions of the firm, particularly with its customers. Journals and day-books provide a chronological record of receipts and expenditure whereas the ledgers record the same information by account. All entries record the name of the customer, date of transaction, the goods purchased, and cost
