Lintner's father was George Ames Lintner, a Lutheran minister at Schoharie, Middleburgh and Cobleskill. His grandfather was Albert Lintner. Lintner's sister, Aurelia, married Peter Swart Danforth in 1839. Danforth was a lawyer and in 1872 was appointed a justice on the New York State Supreme Court.
Review:
These papers consist chiefly of letters and diaries related to the personal life and professional career of Joseph Albert Lintner and his father George Ames Lintner. Correspondence is arranged chronologically into two series: family and professional. Family correspondence consists mostly of letters addressed to Joseph Albert Lintner from his father, stepmother, and sister. The content of these letters generally concern personal and family matters. Professional correspondence also consists chiefly of letters addressed to Joseph Lintner. The content of these letters tend to concern topics related to Lintner's work in the entomological department at the State Museum. Correspondents here included Horatio Seymour, Charles D. Wolcott, Joseph Henry, Roscoe Conkling, and Robert Roosevelt.
Abstract:
Diaries (journals) kept by Joseph Albert Lintner relate primarily to activities and experiences during his years of adolescence and young adulthood. Beginning in 1836, he details his experiences of academic life at Jefferson and Schoharie academies (available on microfiche). This is followed an account living and working in New York City in 1839. During the 1840s, he kept diaries related to his travels in Adirondack Mountains and the Great Lakes region.
Abstract:
Papers relating to George Ames Lintner include his private journals, kept from 1839 to 1871. They contain detailed descriptions of events and activities which make them a useful source of information regarding the history of Schoharie County. In addition, these journals contain comments on slavery, Civil War, presidential elections, and other significant historical events. Other papers of George Ames Lintner, include manuscript texts of many of his sermons on a variety of topics pertinent to Christianity.
