Review:
This collection consists chiefly of letters written by Uberto Adelbert Burnham to his parents, Marvin and Caroline Burnham, in regards to his career, first as a teacher in rural schools in New York State and Illinois; then subsequently his military service in the 76th New York Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. While living in Wapella, Illinois (1859-1860), he comments on the rise of the political fortunes of Abraham Lincoln. During the war, his letters provide vivid details of the battles of 2nd Bull Run and Gettysburg. There are also a number of letters in the collection that were written by family, friends, and relatives who were living in Allegany County, New York; Illinois; Iowa; and other places. The letters generally contain news about family and routine chores, but also include comments on matters regarding political, religious, and social sentiments of the time. In addition, some letters relate the experiences of other family members and friends who also were serving in the armed forces during the Civil War.
