Historical/biog note:
Myron Holley (1779-1841) was the son of Luther and Sarah (Dakin) Holley of Salisbury, Connecticut. He graduated from Williams College in 1799 and moved to western New York State a few years later where he pursued a career and law and politics. He served in the New York State Assembly in 1816 and again in 1820 and 1821. Also served on New York State Canal Commission from 1816 to 1824. His younger brother, Orville L. Holley (1791-1861) studied at Yale and Harvard before pursuing a career as a newspaper editor, writer, historian, and politician.
Review:
These papers consist chiefly of letters Myron and Orville Holley had sent to their father, Luther Holley, and other members of their immediate family. Early letters of Myron Holley detail his academic interests and student life at Williams College, and subsequent time in New Haven, Connecticut, where he took up the study of law. Later, the letters of Myron Holley detail personal and family matters as well as his settlement in western New York, and his career in politics and government. In particular, the letters detail his service in the New York State Assembly, his work relative to handling funds for the construction of the Erie Canal. His involvement with the anti-Masonic and abolitionist movements are also considered in his correspondence.
Review:
Letters written by Orville Holley were addressed primarily to his father, Luther Holley, and brother, John Milton Holley. His early letters detail his academic pursuits and student life, first ant Yale, then later at Harvard. After he finished school, his letters consider his career as a writer and editor of newspapers in New York City, Hudson, New York, and Troy, New York. The papers also include a number of speeches and orations delivered by Orville Holley from 1816 to 1842 that cover topics relative to political, social, economic, and religious issues at the time.
