Historical/biog note:
John Pollard Gaines was born (September 22, 1795) in Augusta County, Virginia. He served as an aide to General Winfield Scott in the Mexican War and, later, as a member of the U.S. Congress from Kentucky (1847-1849). Appointed as governor of the Oregon Territory in 1850 by President Zachary Taylor, Gaines served (1850-1853) during the first series of Indian wars which broke out in the region. He died (December 9, 1857) in Salem.
Review:
Papers include: Certificate of appointment as territorial governor of Oregon; correspondence related to his service in the United States Congress as a representative from Kentucky (1847-1849) and as governor of Oregon Territory (1850-1853); diary (1850) while on board the ship "Supply"; letter books (1849-1855); Cayuse Indian War claims (1849-1853); accounts of Rogue River Indians and Indian trade; private receipts and account books (1822-1857); Oregon petitions, as well as materials concerning the territorial library and the Mexican War. Much of the correspondence is with Cassius M. Clay, a prominent abolitionist and political associate of Gaines. The papers also include a considerable amount of material related to the estate of John Pollard Gaines.
Provenance note:
The papers of John Pollard Gaines were acquired by the New York State Library sometime prior to the Capitol Fire of March 1911 which most likely destroyed acquisition records as well as significantly damaging the papers themselves. The papers were accessioned to holdings in June 1939.
Access restriction:
