Historical/biog note:
Street, born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. in ca. 1811, was a lawyer, librarian, poet, and author. He was admitted to the New York bar. He published poems, A winter scene and A day in March, in the New York Evening Post. He was an editor of the literary magazine. Northern Light, in Albany, N.Y. from 1843 to 1844. He was director of the New York State Library from 1848 to 1862 and was law librarian until 1868. He died in Albany in 1881.
Summary:
A collection of papers created by Street, the bulk of which consists of manuscript copies of his writings. Included are, biographical papers, articles and newspaper clippings concerning Street's life; a genealogy of the Street and allied families; correspondence, including Street's letters to and from his wife and to his publishers; and copies of speeches and addresses given by Street. Also included are several documents relating to Street's tenure as New York State Librarian. These include catalogs, reports and several book lists.
