Historical/biog note:
Born in Cold Spring, New York, Warren was graduated from West Point in 1850 and appointed to the Corps of Topographical Engineers. He served in Kentucky, New Orleans and the West till 1859, where he helped to compile maps and reports of the Pacific Railroad explorations, participated in the campaign against the Sioux in 1855, and was engaged in making maps and reconnaissances of Dakota and Nebraska Territories.
Historical/biog note:
During the Civil War he served with the Army of the Potomac. In May 1861 he joined the 5th New York Volunteers. Promoted to brigadier-general of volunteers September 26, 1862, he was at the Battle of Fredericksburg, December 1862, and was made Chief Topographical Engineer, Army of the Potomac, February 4, 1863. From June 8, 1863 to August 12, 1863 he was Chief Engineer, Army of the Potomac. For his accomplishments at the Battle of Gettysburg, he was assigned to temporary command of the II Corps, August 12 and on March 24, 1864, received command of the V Corps.
Historical/biog note:
At Five Forks on April 1, 1865, he was relieved of his command by General Sheridan, following a Union victory in the last decisive battle of the war. He immediately initiated steps for a Court of Inquiry; however, his requests were not honored until December 1879. In 1882 he was vindicated.
Historical/biog note:
Following the war he continued his military service as a major in the Corps of Engineers, specializing in river-and-harbor work. Included in his commissions were the superintending engineer of surveys and improvements of the upper Mississippi, supervision of the Rock Island Bridge across the Mississippi, and member of the advisory council of the Harbor Commission of Rhode Island. Warren died in 1882.
