Historical/biog note:
Civil War soldier and minor artist of the Hudson River School of Landscape Painters. Born and raised in Belmont, Massachusetts, enlisted in 1862 to serve three years with 14th Massachusetts Regiment of Infantry, which was later reorganized as the 1st Massachusetts Regiment Heavy Artillery. He mustered in as 2nd Lieutenant on 20 March 1863; promoted to 1st Lieutenant by 23 August 1863; and was discharged from service due to disability on 1 December 1863. He was married to Mary A. Du Bois. They removed to Catskill, New York after the Civil War, where he devoted much of his time to landscape painting.
Review:
A series of papers related to Benjamin Stone's personal, military, and artistic careers. Included are official orders, certificate of appointment, discharge certificate, and other documents concerning his service in the 1st Massachusetts Regiment, Heavy Artillery. Also included is a letter book regarding his paintings, 1864-1873; letters to his wife and relatives, 1872-1874, regarding personal and family matters; and personal diaries, 1869 and 1875.
