Historical/biog note:
Isaiah Townsend (1777-1838) and John Townsend (1783-1854) were merchants in Albany, N.Y. The brothers and their heirs, Franklin, Theodore and Rufus, were active in business and political developments of the day. Their business interests began and were concentrated in the iron trade but also included salt production, railroads, steamboats, real estate in New York and other states, banking, and insurance. Franklin Townsend (1821-1898), the son of Isaiah Townsend, later assumed responsibility for the business and financial interests of his father and uncle.

Correspondence, 1808-1852, including instructions to agents concerning the slaughtering and packing of cattle and making tallow for the northern army of the United States as the Townsends were contractors for supplies; bills and receipts, 1806-1854; leases, 1795-1815; promissory notes, 1821-1837; accounts 1815-1826; receipts for repairs on the Schuyler Mansion, 1806-1810; correspondence, 1829-1833, of John Townsend as mayor of Albany, including bids and plans for the construction of a new City Hall; papers concerning the Albany and Bath Ferry Company, 1821-1825; papers relating to the Watervliet Turnpike Company, 1820-1831; and stock certificates and papers related to the development of the Albany Basin, which eventually became the Port of Albany; letters to John Townsend 1839-1852, concerning the development and operation of railroads, in particular the Utica and Schenectady Railroad Company; letters to John Townsend, August-September 1824, in regards to plans for the Marquis de Lafayette to visit Albany; letters from Lewis Benedict and documents related to the "Somers" mutiny affair, 1842-1843; letters of Ambrose Spencer and John Canfield Spencer in regards to matters of business, government, and politics; and a narrative relative to the anti-rent war written by Franklin Townsend, 1839.
