Historical/biog note:
Union army officer. Ingraham served in the Quartermaster's Department and eventually attained the rank of first lieutenant. He was stationed at Fort Pulaski, Georgia through much of his service. Ingraham was killed in action, June 1, 1864 at Cold Harbor, Va.
Abstract:
Collection consists chiefly of letters Ingraham sent to his parents and sister at Amenia, New York, while serving in the army during the Civil War. Most of the letters relate to the journey of the 48th New York Regiment down the Atlantic coast to Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, and its subsequent posting at Fort Pulaski, Georgia. They contain detailed descriptions of camp life, accounts of skirmishes and a great deal of incidental social and economic detail.
