Historical/biog note:
"Factsheet Five" was a periodical consisting mostly of short reviews of alternative press publications along with contact details of the editors and publishers. It was founded by Mike Gunderloy in 1982 as a review zine designed to cross-connect the Libertarian movement and science fiction fans. Mike's non-judgmental reviewing style and his openness to reviewing whatever he was sent soon made Factsheet Five the center for zine culture and zinester networking at the time. Gunderloy gave up the publication of Factsheet Five in 1992, and shortly thereafter it was taken up by R. Seth Friedman. The final printed version of Factsheet Five was issued in 1998.
Review:
The "Factsheet Five" collection consists of over 10,000 zine titles accumulated by Mike Gunderloy during the decade 1982-1992, when he was publisher and editor of the publication. These zines cover a broad spectrum of political, social, and cultural issues representing viewpoints from the far left to the far right. A wide array of topics are considered too, particularly relative to literature, art, and music. The zines came from alternative and underground presses all over the world. The collection also includes mail art and other graphic material that was submitted as part of a mail art exchange and sales listing service offered by the periodical; an extensive collection of musician press kits organized by recording label name; and the business correspondence and records related to publication and distribution of Factsheet Five.
Provenance note:
In 1992, Mike Gunderloy, the creator of the magazine Factsheet Five, donated his zine archive as well as his business records related to editing and publishing Factsheet Five. Accretions have been made to this collection through donation from various individuals in subsequent years.
