Historical/biog note:
Jacob Sanders Glen (1773-1859) was a prominent landowner and merchant of Montgomery County. His forebears beginning with Alexander Glen at Scotia in 1662 acquired parcels of land in the Mohawk River valley region of New York State. The principal properties of Jacob S. Glen were in the present town of Glen, in Montgomery County, New York. He settled in the hamlet of 'Voorheesville', now Glen, where he operated a retail store and from which he managed his rental properties and shareholdings.
Historical/biog note:
In his earlier years he was involved in sending trade goods via Niagara to Detroit. He participated in several short lived partnerships, often with relatives. Throughout his career he kept lawyers busy with suits against debtors. He was interested in various public works projects, served on the school board and held congregational offices. He also served for six years as an officer in a Schenectady militia company.
Historical/biog note:
Glen was twice married, first to Catherine Visscher, and later to Maria M. Van Rensselaer. He had no children, but raised two nieces, Sarah and Maria Horsford, after their father was rendered mentally incompetent. Maria Horsford inherited Glen's property, and her husband John V.S. Edwards, and sons, J.S.Glen Edwards and Edward Edwards, continued operating the general store and other family business interests well into the early 20th century.
Review:
The papers of Jacob S. Glen relate to both Glen's business and personal life. There is also material from other Glen family members and relatives of allied Sanders, Visscher, Van Rensselaer, Horsford, and Edwards families. The collection includes a great deal of land papers including deeds, leases and agreements. Family landholdings were located in present day Montgomery, Schenectady, Schoharie, and Herkimer counties in New York State. Other areas of the collection include financial records of the general store and other business interests, memorandum books and personal letters written to Glen.
Abstract:
The continued operation of the general store by John V.S. Edwards and later by his sons, J.S. Glen Edwards and Edward Edwards, is documented in a series of detailed account ledger books, day books, receipts, invoices, and canceled checks, from 1860 to the early 1900s. Some of these records also indicate they also operated a cheese factory from the 1860s to the 1880s.
