Historical/biog note:
William Swetland was an attorney, businessman, and resident of Plattsburgh, New York, during the first half of the 19th century. He was raised primarily in Granville, New York, and was a graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont.
Review:
The papers consist chiefly of correspondence between William Swetland with his wife, Henrietta, and other close relatives of the Swetland and allied Kurtland families. Most of the letters were written between 1810 and 1822, and the content generally details personal and family matters. Some of the letters discuss military action near Plattsburgh during the War of 1812, and Swetland's journey to St. Louis, by way of Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; Brownsville, Pennsylvania; Portsmouth, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; and Edwardsville, Illinois.
Review:
Included are school and college compositions and public orations (1807-1810) related primarily to his academic studies at Middlebury College; a complaint to the Justice of the Peace and the Grand Jurors of Castleton, Vermont, about Oliver Carver's being guilty of unnecessary traveling on the Sabbath (1784); and an 1819 lease between John Palmer and Henry Delord for land in Plattsburgh, New York.
